Let Go, Let GU
==================
My version:
GU is a flavored syrupy gel that comes in small packets. You take them to replace carbs/sugars used up in real endurance events.
Their version:
GU Energy Gel is specifically formulated to energize your body during exercise. GU gives the most concentrated form of immediate energy with no stomach bulk or distress, is quickly and efficiently absorbed, and will maintain your blood sugar at the optimal level for a great workout start to finish.
Now read on, please.
==================
You get a dose of talent, you get some discipline and desire to develop the talent, you get some courage to race the talent, and you get some durability. (Yes, for my non-running book reading friends, the concept is plagiarized.)
The talent you get means a whole lot when comparing yourself directly to others, 9.xx times our of 10 it is the prime determinant of a racing result. But since it is the one thing you really can't work on, talent means nothing when comparing you to yourself. (Stay with me now.) You can get more discipline (a coach, a team, a goal, a blog), you can develop your courage (by trial and experience), and you can learn to train savvy to avoid injury, but you just can't change talent.
I was recently told that being near great talent is as powerful of an addiction as, well, name your poison. I agree. But for me this running thing is less about the God given talent and more about the GU gotten results. My point is this, you can only control what you can control. Train to make yourself the best you can be. Buy GU in bulk.
Today, swam, a little over a mile, a little under 40 minutes. Spin tonight, 14 running tomorrow AM.

So you were at the pool on "Serious Swimmer" day again. Last Wednesday you noted that these people were using various 'contraptions' to increase their speed and/or strength. Do you have any interest in exploring these options for yourself? For example, do you believe in training with hand paddles? Perhaps using these would help propel yourself faster through the water, but what happens on race day (when you're not wearing them)? Is that actually just a strengthening technique? What do the books/articles/blogs say about using floats, boards, and hand attachments? I guess each individual has his/her own theories & preferences regarding swim training gear--just as they do with wetsuits. By the way, have you decided to wetsuit or not to wetsuit? -S.
Let me put it this way, this morning, my lane partner, a fat guy in a speedo, made me look like I was doing the dog paddle. My interest in swimming is that it is good for the half ironman which is good for my running. I can't imagine getting too serious about it. Also, screw the wetsuit, too complicated (unless the water is cold, then zip me up!)
I must admit you lost me on the GU Energy Gel info. Is it internal (spiritual) or external (application of a manufactured product)?
Anyway---continued steady and positive daily work-outs!
My best,
L
No, GU is nothing like the cream or the clear or ginseng for that matter. Basically, it is raw sugary goo (GU is just one of the many a brand names). I edited the post so that it will hopefully be clearer when the Asian readers log in.
I suspected I was trying to do to much on this post. But, thanks for the kind words.
Oh, I see now - Raw Sugary Goo application. Well, with Spring's iminent arrival, I would be wary of early morning bees and other pollinators.
Continued good work?
My Best,
L
For swimming, the best way to increase your speed is 'tappering'. You must do high distance workouts for a period of time and then the last 3 days before your race, do about a 1/4 of the workout. I never understood why but this method really works to increase your speed, but thru eight years of swimming I can testify to it's merits.
