I am torn on this one.
The old Wonka was pretty darn good. Before seeing the new Johnny Depp version, I asked myself, isn't time better spent movie-tizing an original story rather than remaking this cinema classic? (sidebar: like wasn't The Grinch a total waste of time? yuck) Yet, I must admit, the new one was not so bad. The headline is definitely "Depp Out-weirds Wilder".

I think if someone was looking for a more realistic verson they would choose the original one.

I agree with you, especially since you have read the books. But the glass elevator was really well done in the new one.
Depp is victorious, Wilder is a 'bad nut' for being a poor sport regarding the remake.
I was especially entertained by the "new" oompa loompas and their "new" original songs. I liked the last image as the movie ended, but I won't give it away (think powdered sugar). I try to focus on that rather than the...puppet scene.

Depp's Wonka was a little too comfortable in the purple velvet get up. He was way out of the chocolate factory.
