November 11

Veterans Day 2005. I am kicking myself for missing the parade and for not wearing some old medals on my suit the way Russian politician/veterans used to.

"My younger brother calls me a killer and my Daddy calls me a vet..."

I think that was from a Charlie Daniel's song. Of course, I don't have a younger brother and both may Dad and I were/are vets though we never referred to each other as such.

This is totally an underated "holiday" in my opinion. What? The Post Office is closed? Big deal. With so little fanfare around this day, I always wonder why so many young men and women sacrifice so much when it so easy just to freeride in this wealthy and soft country of ours. It baffles me. Don't take it for granted folks.

I am going to run an easy six.

My thoughts on Veteran's Day...Fortunately for all American citizens, there are still many special young men and women willing to sacrifice so much to ensure our continued national and personal freedoms. I respect all of them for their strength of character and commitment.

An editorial cartoon in our large daily newspaper pictured marching veterans in a parade with the copy, "Salute to men and women who didn't have other priorities."

In our quest for 3-day week-ends, President's Day has replaced Lincoln & Washington individual birthday celebrations; Memorial Day and Columbus Day are now called "Observances," not necessarily on May 30 and Oct. 12, respectively.

Sounding so "high and mighty," however, I'm ashamed to admit that at first I didn't realize that today was, indeed, Nov. 11th, and not just another created 3-day week-end "observance."

Hope your easy six run went well!

My best,
L
